I purchased an old model Traxxas rustler. It has a newer xl5 esc and Titan 12t brushed motor with a 2600 2 cell lipo. I have been out out the R/C scene for some years now. I also got a Traxxas Rustler 3710 with a 20 turn motor VTG speed controller.

Any suggestions, recomendations, ect?

Upgrade the the transmission to VXL specs and upgrade the bearing carriers on all 4 corners to the newer
5x11 bearing carriers.
Then go brushless and lipo :D

Updating them should be pretty simple to do. However, how do I actually figure out what I am really looking at? Meaning, how do I find out what model each of them are? Seems to be an important fact when hunting bodies, batteries, tires, and upgrade parts. How do I know if parts I find will actually work on what I got? These are my first Traxxas trucks, I have dealt with only my 1989 Tamiya Clod Buster and early 90's Associated RC10GT. I have been out of the game so long I feel I might not actually get what I am looking for. I got these two very cheap and they both run great, I just want to make them better.

Thanks for all your help.

All parts from the new rustler will fit on the old one.

That is good to know. Been doing a little reading today and it appears the only spoiler in the pot is just making sure I don't get anything specifically for the nitro because they wont fit. I can't find any answers definitively on that but I did find where the front wheels are different and bodies fit different. I really do appreciate your help. Our local hobby shop is only interested in talking to a person if they are "serious" about spending money. They seem so busy that it is hard for me to even pin down a time with them to make sure they are evening running right.

My son has been blowing and going at the schoolyard across the street with the one pictured on the left. Had to do a little tweaking to the front end, kept pulling to the right, even when trimmed out at neutral. For what I got them for I cannot complain. But, I really need to go back to RC101 again since I have been out of the loop since 1995.

Kudos to this forum by the way, I have found some really great information here and have found it to have some great resources.
