hey i just got an e-maxx and i was wondering what the difference is in the stick batteries and the side by side batteries and which ones would be better??

The difference is only an issue if you have molded battery compartments - as in for example many Tamiya vehicles, where you can only use the sticks - or in several sedans. where you need side-by-side in sets of 3 - aka. "saddle packs".
Bus since you're out there buying - make sure you get NiMH's!
